Adapting Indigenous Engagement Strategies in Mine Remediation 

SRC and CIM Magazine co-hosted a webinar about the milestones of SRC’s Lorado Mill remediation project, the monitoring process and how Indigenous inclusion and engagement were critical components of the project’s success at all stages.

Quick Facts:

• The Lorado Mine and Mill Site is a legacy uranium processing facility in northwest Saskatchewan that operated in the 1950s and was abandoned in the 1960s with no remediation. 

• The site contained over 20 hectares of unconfined radioactive tailings, an acidic lake with elevated concentrations of dissolved metals, demolition debris and hazardous waste with hydrocarbon and asbestos components. 

• Since 2008, SRC has been managing Lorado on behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan as part of Project CLEANS (Cleanup of Abandoned Northern Sites), which also includes 36 other mine and mill sites near Uranium City.
