Trichinella Testing
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) mandates that all pork and horse meat destined for exportation is tested for Trichinella. SRC is the only CFIA-approved Trichinella testing laboratory in Western Canada and delivers accurate results with quick turnaround for licensed operators.
Trichinella are parasitic roundworms responsible for causing trichinosis (also known as trichinellosis) through the consumption of raw or undercooked infected pork or horse meat. Most infections in animal species go undiagnosed. Trichinellosis is classified as a reportable disease under Canada's Health of Animals Act.
Artisanal pork products not prepared by conventional methods must be tested as well for Trichinella species prior to their sale in Canada. Consequently, post-slaughter testing of individual pork and horse carcasses is required to ensure food safety and meet export certification standards.
- Detection of Trichinella in meat is achieved through acidic pepsin digestion followed by identification via microscopy
- Fast turnaround time (within 24 hours)
