Lorado Uranium Mill Site

The Lorado Mill site is located approximately eight kilometres south of Uranium City on the west side of Nero Lake. The mill operated from 1957–1960. Estimates of the total amount of ore processed at the Lorado mill range from 305,000 to 545,000 tonnes.

The total volume of tailings is estimated to be 227,000 m3, of which 50,000 m3 is in the water at Nero Lake. The exposed tailings, covering approximately 14 hectares, are located adjacent to Nero Lake.

2013 Update

In 2011 and 2012, SRC managed the development of a conceptual risk reduction plan, and associated environmental impact statement (EIS), for the abandoned Lorado uranium mill site. Several preferred options were considered for the remediation of the mine tailings and Nero Lake. This plan is now in the final stages of review and sign off by the regulators. Using information from this plan, SRC has begun procurement of a remediation design engineering consultant. Once an engineering consultant has been chosen, work will begin on developing a detailed remediation plan for the site.

SRC has continued to keep Athabasca residents updated on progress. At multiple public meetings in Uranium City, from December 2010 to December 2011, attendees provided input to SRC and regulators, which added a vital local viewpoint to the project.
