SmartDriver Training

About

Now boarding!

The SmartDriver Training Program for school bus drivers is a federal program that is being offered in Saskatchewan through the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC). Financial support for this program is being provided by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).

The training teaches commercial drivers how to reduce fuel consumption by upwards of 10 per cent and be more conscientious of their greenhouse gas emissions. SRC began delivering the SmartDriver training program in August, 2008 after a successful pilot of the program in 2007.

Participants

The program takes only two to three hours of a driver’s time but helps in reducing fuel consumption over the long haul.

Both rural and city operators will benefit from this program. Drivers who cover 100 kilometers or more a day are encouraged to consider training.

Benefits

The training focuses on sensible driving practices which can significantly improve fuel efficiency.   The impact of stops and starts, weather and road conditions, visibility, idling, and speed are covered in this course as are alternative fuels and advanced technologies.

Many drivers mistakenly believe that diesel engines must be idled for a long time when first started, and kept idling during cold weather. Dispelling myths such as this can yield significant savings.

Information covered in the training can be transferred over to personal vehicle use.

Reducing the need for fuel saves your organization cash and also reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
