Research & Technology > Energy Conservation > Net Metering
The Saskatchewan Research Council is delivering this program on behalf of Go Green Saskatchewan and SaskPower Eneraction. Through their financial support, SRC is able to provide eligible recipients with a reimbursement fee, equivalent to up to 35 per cent of eligible costs (maximum eligible project costs are limited to $100,000 which would equate to a maximum payment of $35,000). Projects with generating capacities of 100kW or less that comply with the local utility's net metering policies and enter into net metering contracts with their local electric utilities are eligible for funding under this program. Participants in the program agree to give SRC access to their utility records for 18 months prior to and 10 years after installation of the approved generating equipment in order to qualify for payment.
Eligible costs may include:
- Safety/engineering analyses or inspections required for compliance with local utility policies
- Costs required for a bidirectional net meter to be located at the utility connection point
- Energy production meter, separate and distinct from the utility's bidirectional meter
- First-time inter-connection fees
- Costs for relevant permits to set-up and commission equipment
- Start-up capital costs of generating equipment
- Installation costs for generating equipment. NOTE: If other government funding is used to purchase and/or install equipment, funding from SRC will be capped at the point where 100% of the costs have been paid by government sources.
Please note: only fees invoiced by third party contractors will be considered eligible costs.
The types of generating equipment currently included in this program are:
- Wind
- Low-impact hydro
- Biomass
- Heat reclaim
- Flare gas and
- Photovoltaic (solar)

SaskPower, through an agreement with TD Canada Trust, will reduce TD's fixed interest rate loans for residential and farm customers wishing to install self-generated renewable energy systems. Loans of up to $50,000 are available.
Please contact the Saskatchewan Research Council if the generating technology you will be installing is not on this list.
Seven steps to receive funding under SRC's net metering program:
- Contact your local electrical provider for more information about any policies they have in place..
- Contact the Saskatchewan Research Council to obtain application and consent forms.
- Get the required permits, inspections, and analyses performed, including those required under the bylaws of the city, town or municipality where the installation occurs.
- Install the generating equipment, including the energy production meter.
- Perform other tasks required to comply with your utility's net metering policies, including the signing of a net metering agreement with the utility.
- Have your utility install a bidirectional net meter.
- Fill out SRC's application package and submit with original receipts (will be returned); remember to send along your signed electrical and natural gas consent forms and your net metering contract. (Contact Kelly Winder at 306-933-6431 for more information).
