Rapid Wheat DNA Testing
Between 2000 and 2008, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) collaborated with industry stakeholders to begin developing DNA-based technology that could identify wheat classes and varieties. AAFC's research project identified single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) as a DNA analysis method to distinguish between Canadian wheat classes.
The SNP testing technology provided by AAFC is being built on by SRC's GenServe Laboratories™ to meet industry requirements for variety identification.
Before this technology can be used in industry, GenServe Laboratories™ must ensure the technology meets a number of specific minimum criteria, including a rapid test that is consistent and highly reliable.
Once GenServe Laboratories™ confirms that rapid wheat DNA testing can be carried out on a commercial scale they will proceed with organizing and delivering the services.
As part of their agreement with AAFC, GenServe Laboratories™ is also using DNA analysis to test thousands of seeds each crop year for wheat midge resistance in support of the midge refuge strategy. Currently, GenServe Laboratories™ offers a number of blend specific tests to seed growers.
GenServe Laboratories™ Innovation and Development team is working hard to develop industry-relevant testing options beginning with the two most widely grown wheat classes, durum and Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS).
