SRC is completing the front-end engineering design on a pilot-scale fluidized bed gasification system. This pilot gasifier is designed for five tonnes/day biomass feed. The gasification process will include both a fluidized bed and a riser section to allow for indirect heating. This design was selected to provide maximum flexibility to feedstock, produce a syngas for further utilization to produce heat, power, and chemicals. It is also scalable for biomass fed process economies of scale.
The gasification pilot plant will help to assess the commercial viability of the diverse biomass feedstock available to clients within Saskatchewan and abroad. The integration of syngas production with the syngas and pyrolysis oil utilization research at SRC is also a unique opportunity in that clients may be able to assess syngas clean-up technologies and syngas catalyst technologies utilizing a representative syngas feed.
SRC is planning on beginning construction on the gasification system in fall 2010.
