Building Better Means Building Green
There has been a lot of talk about “green” buildings, lately. However, many companies and individuals struggle when they try to turn this talk into livable, workable and affordable commercial buildings and houses.
Enter SRC research engineer Kelly Winder, who has years of experience in helping businesses and environmentally conscious homeowners find the best solutions to building green.
Winder says that people often fail to realize the many potential benefits to constructing green buildings.
“The largest potential advantage of green buildings is the improvements in indoor environmental quality that they can produce.” He lists better lighting and temperature levels, increased access to daylight and less harmful chemicals as a few of the potential rewards for building green.
As an electrical engineering expert in SRC’s Building Performance unit, Winder provides advice on how to implement and evaluate energy-saving equipment and practices.
He also assists companies and individuals in accessing funding through Saskatchewan’s Net Metering program, which is designed for people who want to generate their own electricity using wind, solar, flare gas, heat recovery systems and other environmentally friendly power sources.
And he helps companies in finding ways to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards, the predominant green building rating system. One way he accomplishes this is by taking part in Building Saskatchewan Green, the province’s premier sustainable buildings conference.
As it turns out, building green doesn’t have to be that difficult with guidance from Winder and SRC Building Performance experts.
